How to play
Resigning and draws
A game ends in checkmate, on time, when you resign, or in a draw. Here is how to end one yourself, and which draws the board recognises.
All articlesResigning
Choose Resign at any time, on either turn. The board asks first: choose Resign again to end the game, or Keep playing to carry on.
Offering a draw
Against the assistant, choose Offer draw on either turn. The board says it's waiting for an answer, and the assistant accepts or declines. If it declines, or simply plays its next move, the board says so, and you can offer again later. There is one offer at a time.
Stockfish doesn't take draw offers: against it, play on or resign.
Draws by the rules
The board ends the game as a draw by itself when one of these happens:
| Draw | When |
|---|---|
| Stalemate | The player to move has no legal move, and isn't in check. |
| Repetition | The same position comes up for the third time. |
| Fifty-move rule | Fifty moves each go by with no capture and no pawn move. |
| Not enough material | Neither side has enough pieces left to checkmate. |
After the game
The board shows the result, the last move and how many moves were played. Against the assistant, its review of the game appears on the board once it has written it. To play again, choose New game, or ask in the chat.
