All articlesTurning it on
In Settings, turn on Accessibility: keyboard play and announcements. It stays on for your next games.
Moving on the board
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
| Tab | Reach the board. One square holds the focus, starting on e2. |
| Arrow keys | Move to the next square. They follow the board when it's flipped. |
| Enter or Space | Pick up the piece on the square, or play it to the square. |
| Esc | Put the piece down without moving it. |
Typing a move
Below the board, the field “Type a move or a square” takes:
- a move in the usual notation, such as
Nf3,exd5orO-O; - a move as two squares, such as
e2e4, with the piece added to promote, such ase7e8q; - a single square, such as
e2, which works like clicking it.
Then press Enter, or choose Play. A square on its own, such as e4, is read as a square, not as a pawn move: type e2e4 to move the pawn.
Promoting
From the keyboard, type the promotion with its piece: e7e8q for a queen, r, b or n for a rook, bishop or knight.
What is announced
- With Accessibility on, every move as it's played, for example “Black pawn takes knight on e4, check”.
- Always, whether Accessibility is on or off: the line that says whose move it is, the result, and the board's notices.
- Each square says its name and its piece, such as “e4, white knight”.
Sound
Tones mark moves, captures, check and the end of a game. Turn them off with Sound in Settings.
